Question : Can I work without Qualified Teacher Status?
Answer : Overseas trained teachers (OTTs) from outside the EEA are able to teach in England for up to four years without the need to gain English Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). As such you may be referred to as a 'temporary teacher'. In many cases your pay will be calculated on an 'OTT without QTS' scale but in practice many schools make up the difference between the unqualified and the qualified pay rate so OTTs are effectively paid at the National Scale for qualified teachers.
The Government encourages OTTs to apply to gain QTS in England .The benefits of this include the fact that your salary will be calculated on the 'Qualified' rate and, more importantly for some OTTs, you can then seek and obtain permanent posts, longer term posts and promoted posts within schools (subject to any visa regulations).
The Teacher Training Agency is the body responsible for programmes that enable OTTs to gain QTS while working as a teacher. In order to gain QTS you will need to demonstrate that you meet the required QTS standards. As a qualified teacher from overseas you can apply for QTS assessment without any further training. If you have more than two years of previous experience, you could also be assessed against the Induction Standards and not have to take an induction year. Alternatively, you might follow a training plan that could last up to a maximum of a year.
The General Teaching Council for England (GTC) has a wide-ranging remit for teachers. All those with QTS must register with the GTC however OTTs without QTS do not register.
