Will I be eligible to work in the UK?
Here we have provided basic guidelines regarding the main routes for working in the UK, should you require further information please contact us. Information is also available from the Home Office, there website is included in the links section of Athona.com.

Working Holiday Visa

The Working Holidaymaker Scheme is an arrangement where a Commonwealth citizen aged between 17 and 30 can come to the UK for an extended holiday of up to two years. You can work but only if this is not the main reason for your stay. The holiday should be the main reason for your stay. To qualify you must be able to show that you:
• are a Commonwealth citizen, a British Overseas Territories citizen, a British Overseas citizen or a British National (Overseas)
• are aged between 17 and 30
• want to come to the UK for an extended holiday, and intend to take employment as part of your holiday for no more than 12 months during your stay
• do not intend to set yourself up in or run a business, or work as a professional sportsperson during your stay
• are single, or are married to someone who also qualifies as a working holidaymaker and you plan to take the working holiday together
• do not have any dependent children aged five or over, or who will be five before your holiday ends
• can support yourself and live in the UK without needing any help from public funds
• have not spent time in the UK on a previous working holidaymaker visa
• intend to leave the UK at the end of your holiday.

UK Ancestry (e.g. – you have a British parent or grandparent

You will qualify if you can show that:
• you are a Commonwealth citizen
• you are aged 17 or over
• you have a grandparent who was born in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man (see note below)
• you have a grandparent who was born in what is now the Republic of Ireland before 31 March 1922 (see note below)
• you are able to work and intend to do so in the UK, and
• you can support yourself and any dependants, and live without needing any help from public funds.

Note: if you or your parent (who you are claiming ancestry through) is adopted, you can still apply for entry under this category. You must show evidence of the legal adoption with your application form.

Dual nationality

If you have dual nationality between your country and Britain, or another EU Country, you have the right to work in the UK

Work Permit

An application for a work permit can only be made by UK employers who have a specific job to offer a specific person; this is generally a degree level or equivalent profession where there is a skills shortage. The Home Office will need to be satisfied that a resident of the UK or EU cannot fill the vacancy before a work permit is issued.

Recruitment agencies are not able to issue work permits to allow you to work through them on a locum (temporary) basis, however, we can find employers looking to take permanent staff, for more information please contact us at info@athona.com or speak to your recruitment consultant.

When arriving in the UK what do I need to do?
As soon as you know your arrival date please let your recruitment consultant know, if you want work to start as soon as your arrive (give or take a few days) we can find you a position prior your arrival in the UK, so you know you have a job ready to start.

How and when will I be paid?
You will be paid weekly directly into your bank account. We are legally required to deduct the current rate of tax and National Insurance contributions; this is known as Pay As You Earn (or PAYE). We can advise you on obtaining a tax code and NI number and guide you through the process.

Some locums choose to work through a “Limited Company”. Rather then be paid PAYE through your agency you can become an employee and shareholder of a limited company. This enables you to receive some of your pay in the form of a dividend and qualify for savings on tax and NI. Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information.

If you need help setting up a UK bank account on arrival in the UK please speak to your recruitment consultant who will be happy to assist.

What other information do I need regarding working in the UK?
Work is usually available all over the UK.

We will on most occasions be able to place you prior to your arrival so that you know you have a job to start when you arrive.

Some teachers work for 1 term then maybe go travelling. While you are travelling we can keep in touch with you by email and get your next position lined up for when you are ready to return.

The weather in the UK can be very changeable. It is cold in January & February so pack some warm clothes if you are arriving at that time from a hot country. Summers can be hot especially June – August. It’s also true that’s Scotland is a few degrees colder all year round then England – but worth considering working there as it’s a beautiful location.

For any further questions you may have, please contact your recruitment consultant, who will be happy to help you. Alternatively e-mail us on education@athona.com for further information regarding working in the UK.
