What does a GP do in the London Ambulance Service?

As a GP with the London Ambulance Service, your role is all about supporting urgent care remotely. You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team helping to manage patient care across Greater London, offering vital clinical input during emergencies and urgent cases.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting telephone and video triage of 111 and 999 calls
  • Deciding on the most appropriate care pathway for patients
  • Advising patients on treatment, medications, or referrals
  • Supporting ambulance paramedics and clinicians with complex decision-making
  • Recording patient outcomes and follow-ups

A typical day in the life of a GP in the London Ambulance Service

You’ll start your day with a clinical briefing and review ongoing cases. Throughout your shift, you’ll manage a mix of calls from minor illnesses to high-risk emergencies, using your experience to keep patients safe and reduce pressure on A&E departments.

You’ll work alongside experience paramedics, clinical advisors and advanced practitioners, using your medical judgement to:

  • De-escalate or escalate care appropriately
  •  Recommend safe alternatives to A&E
  • Help improve patient outcomes through better triage
  • Guide patients on medication, treatments or referrals
